Late Nite Eats: Episode 9 - Charleston

Welcome to Charleston

Charleston is an incredible city with a casual Southern vibe, a lot of bustling daytime activity, a lively nightlife scene, and great food. The growing number of inventive cocktail venues and craft eateries make for a thriving culinary scene… just ask the locals! Notable areas include the French Quarter and Mount Pleasant, which is located off the peninsula by way of the Ravenel Bridge (colloquially known as the Cooper River Bridge).


Where I Ate

Craftsmen Kitchen and Tap House: Chef Todd Garrigan, one half of the restaurant brother duo in Charleston (Taylor Garrigan is chef of Home Team BBQ), is funny and laid back. The restaurant, located in the French Quarter on a busy intersection, has a biergarten vibe. The food here is really good, especially when you (mistakenly) expect them to only hone in on their beer selection, which is extensive.

  • Scallop Ceviche and Street Corn: Chilled Scallop Ceviche, Street Corn With Cotija Cheese and El Jefe Mayo
  • Crunchy Dame: BBQ Pork Belly, Gruyere Cheese, Cherry Jam, Mustard Aioli and Sunny Egg

The Rarebit: I came here for brunch before the shoot but would like to experience it in the evening (it’s located in a prime spot for rowdy Charleston nightlife). I thought it had a very Hollywood-meets-American-diner feel. Chef Stacy Spruill makes undeniably classic Southern soul food, and the Moscow Mules, which are on tap, are incredible. Makes sense that this place is well-known for its drinks in addition to its food!

Home Team BBQ: Food by chef Taylor Garrigan, who won Episode 13 of Season 23 of Food Network's Chopped in June 2015, is amazing, and his kitchen is immaculate. The BBQ here is unique in that it’s quite unlike any other state’s BBQ. The restaurant is huge, the atmosphere is fun and the staff is really friendly. One of the better BBQ joints I’ve been to!

  • BBQ Pulled Pork Nachos: Smoked Chicken Chili, Black Beans, Three Housemade Salsas, Sharp Cheddar & Monteray Jack Cheeses, Pickled Jalapenos, Crema, Guac, Chimichurri
  • Smoked Chicken Wings: Dry Rubbed, Alabama White Sauce
  • Rub Is A Battlefield: Ilegal Mezcal, Altos Reposado, Rub Infused Agave, Fresh Pineapple, Lime

My Charleston Tip

The summers are killer hot, with high humidity and lots of mosquitoes, so I recommend visiting in spring or fall. Make sure to swing through the French Quarter, known for its cobblestone streets and classical architecture. Since this city is booming with activity, I recommend making reservations in advance, especially for The Ordinary (one of the better seafood restaurants that I’ve been to). If you’re in the mood for halal, there is a tasty cart on the north end of King St. that's almost as good as NYC halal.
